Implant integrity, safety and biocompatibility has improved considerably over the past 20 years. Implants used prior to the turn of the 21st century were older generation implants and were associated with significantly more complications than what we see today. Complications such as implant rupture and capsular contracture are noticeably less with modern silicone implants. It is for this reason that it is recommended that implants be changed every 10 to 15 years.
